What the 2026 model actually changes
Jeep's core recipe is unchanged: body-on-frame build, solid axles, a fold-down windshield and three roof choices (soft top, three-piece Freedom hardtop, or the power Sky One-Touch). What did change is small but real. Revised hinges make door removal easier than it used to be, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen now sits in the dash across the lineup. Jeep also keeps rolling out limited-run versions through its Twelve 4 Twelve program, which means Willys 392, MOAB 392, Rewind and the 85th Anniversary Edition can appear on dealer lots with little warning.
Powertrains cover a wide spread. The 2.0L turbo four makes roughly 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft, the 3.6L Pentastar V6 lands near 285 hp, and the 4xe plug-in hybrid pairs the turbo four with an electric motor for about 375 hp combined and roughly 21 miles of electric range. An eight-speed automatic is the default, with a six-speed manual still offered on V6 trims. At the top sits the 6.4L HEMI V8 in the MOAB 392, rated at 470 hp and drinking fuel at 13 mpg city and 16 highway.
Four four-wheel-drive systems are available. Command-Trac is the part-time setup on Sport and Willys, Selec-Trac adds a full-time mode for mixed conditions, and Rock-Trac with a 4.0:1 low range, locking differentials and an electronic sway-bar disconnect belongs to Rubicon. Approach, breakover and departure angles remain among the best of any production SUV, and Jeep publishes a water-fording figure around 30 inches for models with the raised intake.
The friction points are the same ones buyers have complained about for years. Highway ride is busy, steering needs attention, and the cabin is loud with knobby tires. Worse for families, adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning are not standard on the base Sport. IIHS testing gave the Wrangler Good ratings in moderate overlap front and side crashes but Marginal headlights and a Poor score for pedestrian front crash prevention, so it did not earn a Top Safety Pick. NHTSA lists one recall covering the child seat tether anchor.
Where the money goes, trim by trim
Prices below come from Jeep's own build tool and Cars.com listings. Add a $1,995 destination charge to most figures, and expect dealer inventory to run above MSRP on special editions.
| Trim | Starting MSRP | Powertrain | EPA combined | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|
| Sport 2-door | $36,035 | 3.6L V6, manual or automatic | 21 mpg | First Wrangler, weekend trails | Basic safety tech costs extra |
| Sport 4-door | $39,040 | V6 or 2.0L turbo | 20 mpg | Families, gear hauling | Options inflate quickly |
| Sahara 4-door | $48,910 | 2.0L turbo | About 20 mpg | Daily driving, Selec-Trac | Paying for comfort kit |
| Rubicon 4-door | $49,740 | V6 or turbo four | 20 mpg | Rock crawling, 33-inch tires | Noise, tire wear, weight |
| Rubicon X 4-door | $61,230 | V6 or turbo four | 20 mpg | Loaded trail rig | Heavy depreciation on options |
| MOAB 392 | $69,995 | 6.4L HEMI V8, 470 hp | 13 city / 16 hwy | V8 enthusiasts | Fuel, insurance, consumables |
Running costs deserve their own line in your budget. EPA-based figures put annual fuel near $2,850 for V6 models, and the V8 roughly doubles that at the pump. Insurance quotes vary sharply by state and credit history, so pull two or three before you sign. Tires on Rubicon and 392 trims are expensive to replace, and lift kits or oversized wheels can push premiums higher.
Three owners, three different answers
Sarah, a nurse in Boulder, Colorado, bought a Rubicon four-door on the theory that she would use the lockers every weekend. Two years later she had engaged them twice. She moved to a Willys with a limited-slip rear differential, kept the trail capability she actually used on local Forest Service roads, and cut her tire and insurance spend. Her advice: count the trails you ran last year before paying for hardware.
Marcus in Asheville, North Carolina, went the other direction. His commute is under 20 miles, so the 4xe covers most weekdays on battery alone, and he charges overnight in the garage. He still takes forest roads in the Blue Ridge on weekends. The catch, he says, is that the plug-in hybrid rewards people who plug in; skip charging and you are hauling a battery pack for modest returns.
Dana, in northern Vermont, cares about January more than July. She ordered a hardtop with remote start and had the underbody treated before the first salt spread. Her warning to shoppers in snow states: the soft top is charming in June and miserable in February, and the Sky One-Touch power top adds a mechanism that can eventually need service.
A shopping sequence that saves money
Decide the body style first. Two doors suit one or two people and tight trails; four doors suit families, dogs and cargo. Then match the 4x4 system to your real use, because Selec-Trac and Rock-Trac are not interchangeable conveniences.
Price factory options against aftermarket equivalents. Jeep dealers sell Mopar accessories, but independent shops often install comparable bumpers, sliders and lighting for less. Ordering from the factory usually beats buying a loaded unit off the lot when you want a specific combination. Test drive at 70 mph on a concrete highway, not just around the block, and check whether the specific VIN has an open recall before delivery.
Local resources do real work here. Jeep Jamboree USA runs guided trail events around the country, the Badge of Honor app lists recognized trails such as the Rubicon Trail in California and Hell's Revenge in Moab, and regional owner clubs in Colorado, the Southeast and New England post trail schedules and mechanic recommendations. Tread Lightly publishes land-use guidance that keeps access open.
Search inventory by trim and powertrain rather than by model year, since special editions arrive monthly and can vanish in days. Compare financing against a credit union before you discuss monthly payments, and ask about dealer-installed accessories in the same conversation as the vehicle price.
The Wrangler rewards buyers who know what they will use and ignore the rest. Pick the doors, roof and transfer case that match your actual week, budget for fuel and tires honestly, and drive two or three builds before committing. Inventory moves quickly as special editions land, so set a saved search with your local dealer and schedule a weekday test drive when the sales floor is quiet.
