The Real Question: Slow Wi-Fi Is Almost Never One Thing
You notice it first in the worst moments: a video call stutters, a page spins, a show buffers while your phone sits next to the router. Your first instinct may be to buy a new router or ask your provider for a bigger plan. Both of those fixes cost money, and neither will help if it is aimed at the wrong problem.
The honest answer is that slow Wi-Fi is rarely caused by one thing. It sits at the intersection of your router, your home's layout, the number of devices you connect, and the internet plan you pay for. The smart move is to diagnose before you spend. With about fifteen minutes and no special tools, you can figure out which suspect matters most.
A Short Self-Audit You Can Run Today
Start by gathering three pieces of information:
- Run a speed test on Wi-Fi from the spot where you usually work or watch, and write down the result.
- Plug a laptop directly into the router with an Ethernet cable, run the same test again, and write down that number.
- Count how many devices are connected to your home network at once, and note where the router sits.
The comparison between the wired test and the wireless test is the most useful number you will get. A quick way to understand it: Wi-Fi and internet speed are two different things. Wi-Fi is the local connection between your devices and your router. Internet speed is the connection between your router and your provider. The wired test mostly measures your internet connection. The wireless test measures the combined path, including your router and everything between it and your device.
Router-Side Suspects
If your wired test looks healthy but the wireless test is disappointing, the bottleneck is likely on the router side. The usual suspects are:
- An older router. Routers support different Wi-Fi generations, and an older model can limit what your devices can actually receive, even when your plan has plenty of speed to offer.
- Placement. A router broadcasts its signal in every direction. Walls, floors, closets, metal objects, and even large appliances absorb or reflect that signal. A router tucked behind a TV or in a corner is working against itself.

The plan side is simpler to check. Your plan advertises a maximum speed, not a guaranteed speed. That number describes what the connection is capable of under good conditions, and real-world results vary by time of day, how many people in your area are online, and the technology your provider uses in your market.
Compare the wired test with what your plan is supposed to deliver. If the wired result is close to your plan's advertised speed, your provider is probably holding up its end, and the problem lives on the Wi-Fi side. If the wired result is far below what your plan promises, that is a conversation for your internet provider, not a reason to buy a new router.
The Decision Rule
Now you can decide without guessing:
- If the wired test matches your plan but Wi-Fi is much slower, start with placement. Move the router out of the corner and off the floor. Retest. If repositioning does not help, a router upgrade is a reasonable next step.
- If the wired test falls far below your plan, contact your ISP before buying anything. The issue is on their side of the connection.
- If both tests are low and consistent, the plan itself or the connection into your home may be the limit, and your provider is the right first call.
