The lineup looks familiar, but the options underneath changed
Jeep's US build pages now list 11 Wrangler models, from a $39,040 Sport to a $79,995 Moab 392 before destination charges. That spread matters more than it used to, because the plug-in hybrid Wrangler is no longer offered in this market. Stellantis has stepped back from plug-in models in North America and pointed buyers toward conventional hybrids and other electrified options instead. If you were counting on a charge port and a short electric commute, that plan needs a rewrite.
What remains is a gas-only range built around two familiar engines and one very loud one. The 2.0L turbo makes 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet and pairs with an eight-speed automatic. The 3.6L V6 makes 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet, and it is the only way to get a six-speed manual. Above them sit the V8 trucks, the Willys 392 and Moab 392, both rated at 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet.
Trim-by-trim comparison
| Trim | Starting MSRP | Best for | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|
| Sport | $39,040 | First Wrangler, future build | V6 manual, tool-free door removal, 12.3-inch touchscreen | Basic wheels and seats, few driver aids |
| Sport S | $41,440 | Budget daily driver | Power windows and locks, nicer wheel package | Options climb quickly |
| Willys | $45,635 | Weekday pavement, weekend dirt | More trail hardware than Sport, still easy to live with | Coarser tires on long highway runs |
| 85th Anniversary | $47,240 | Buyers who like the milestone look | V6, plaid seat inserts, 4-door only | Limited run, no 2-door |
| Rewind | $48,435 | Retro styling fans | Bold graphics, Nappa leather, 4-door only | Polarizing design, $1,900 over a similar build |
| Sahara | $48,910 | Snow-belt commuting | Turbo engine, available full-time 4x4, comfort tuned | 4-door only |
| Rubicon | $50,535 | Rock crawling | Lockers, sway-bar disconnect, 4:1 low range | Firm ride, noticeable wind noise |
| Rubicon X | $61,230 | Turnkey trail rig | Available 35-inch tires, steel bumpers, trail camera | Big price step |
| Willys 392 / Moab 392 | $69,995 / $79,995 | V8 sound and torque | 470 hp, steel bumpers, 35-inch tires | Fuel bills, tire costs |
Two doors or four is the first real decision, and it is not cosmetic. The 2-door turns tighter on narrow trails and parks easily, but cargo space behind the rear seat is modest. The 4-door carries people, gear and a 5,000-pound tow rating with the turbo and automatic. If you plan to pull a small camper or a boat, that rating is the number to check before anything else.
Matching the truck to where you actually drive
Snow country. Upper Midwest and Northeast winters reward the available full-time Rock-Trac or Selec-Trac setup, which lets you leave four-wheel drive engaged on patchy pavement. Part-time systems do not like dry asphalt, and drivers who forget that end up with binding and expensive noises. Dana, a physical therapist in Duluth, spent one winter in a rear-drive sedan before ordering a Sahara. Her reasoning was simple: she wanted one lever to pull when the plow trucks were still asleep.
Desert and canyon country. In Utah, Arizona and the Mojave, heat is harder on tires than rocks are. The Rubicon's 4:1 low range and 100:1 crawl ratio with the manual and 4.88 axle ratio are genuinely useful on ledges, and the electronic sway-bar disconnect keeps the front wheels planted. Marcus, who runs a bike shop outside Asheville, went Rubicon for the lockers and then spent his first summer on the Blue Ridge Parkway learning that mud terrain tires howl above 65 mph.
Wet climates. Pacific Northwest rain and Southeast humidity are unkind to soft tops. A hardtop with the available power top, or a hardtop plus a garage, saves a lot of grief. Soft tops are wonderful in July and less wonderful in February.
The open-air pitch is real, though. Every Wrangler still sheds doors and roof panels, and the quick-release hinges mean no socket set required.
What ownership really costs
Fuel economy lands in the high teens to low 20s combined depending on engine, gearing and how much armor you bolt on. Jeep quotes up to 23 mpg highway for the turbo. Add 35-inch tires, a lift and a roof rack and those numbers slide.
Tires are the sneaky expense. Thirty-five-inch mud terrains cost more per corner, wear faster and change braking feel. Rotate them on schedule, or you will be buying a matched set earlier than planned.
Maintenance is straightforward but not optional. Diff and transfer case fluid changes after deep water crossings protect the parts that make a Wrangler a Wrangler. Soft top windows scratch, so wash them with plenty of water and no grit.
Resale has long been a Wrangler strength, and that softens the total picture. Sarah, a nurse in Boise, bought a Willys instead of a loaded Sahara and put the savings into tires and a winch. Three trail seasons later she is still ahead on the math.
A shopping checklist that saves weekends
Build your trim online first, then call dealers within about 100 miles and ask for stock numbers rather than browsing lot inventory in person. Confirm whether the vehicle on the lot carries the tow package, the hardtop and the axle ratio you want, since those are the items that are painful to add later.
Drive one on the highway at 70 mph before you sign. Wind noise and steering feel are the two things owners mention most, and ten minutes at speed tells you more than a loop around the block. Then find a rough gravel road and listen for rattles.
Ask about the limited-run editions. The Rewind adds retro graphics and leather for about $1,900 over a comparably equipped model, and the 85th Anniversary brings the plaid seats.
Local resources are worth using. Jeep Jamboree events run across the country, dealer-sponsored trail days exist in most mountain states, and the Badge of Honor trail list gives you a reason to plan a weekend in Moab, Big Bear or Windrock. Insurance quotes vary widely by state and by trim, so get one before you commit to the V8.
The Wrangler is not the quietest or the most efficient vehicle in its price range. It is, however, one of very few SUVs you can take apart in your driveway and still drive to work on Monday. Decide which of those two facts matters more to you, pick the trim that matches your roads, and take your time finding one optioned the way you want.
